About the event

‘Afro Hair Styling’ is a debut photography exhibition by Wakasa Sambu. A photo project that portrays different ways that Afro hair can be styled. The project aims to highlight and celebrate the versatility of Afro hair.

The history of Afro hair styling on the African continent is extremely rich and goes back centuries. Today, there are many contemporary Afro hair styles that borrow from these traditional styles, some of them unknowingly. The final selection for this exhibition portrays cornrows, dreadlocks, crotchet, Bantu knots and short hair. Just a few out of countless Afro hair styles that can be seen today.

It is hoped that the audience will develop an appreciation for Afro hair and the variety of ways that it can be styled.

While the initial idea for the project was to capture different hairstyles in a series of portrait sessions, it evolved into visiting a number of salons to capture Afro hair styling in the process. The project also entailed a few studio sessions but was primarily inspired by the oftentimes busy and noisy salon environment.

The Photographer hopes to continue the project by revisiting the initial direction of a portrait series portraying various contemporary Afro hair styles, and incorporating more salons and hair stylists at work.

The exhibition is FREE, you're all welcome.
